Getting up to speed – new terminology and understanding key concepts

With significant change to many terms as part of the new super measures from 1 July 2017, in this session, Aaron discusses many of the important concepts, terminology and how the ATO will regulate their application with contributions and retirement phase.

Should you apply CGT relief?

The decision of whether or not you should apply CGT relief is one of the most important considerations with the super reforms – get it right and it could save thousands of dollars in tax… get it wrong and you have a tax bill that shouldn’t have arisen.  In this session, Aaron will explore the pros and cons of the CGT relief – when you should do elect, when to avoid it, what assets are eligible and how the Commissioner is watching to applying the anti-avoidance provisions.

The new world of retirement phase

The new world of retirement phase introduces concepts of the transfer balance cap, transfer balance accounts and more.  As a result of these measures it requires us to understand the impact of these super reforms on many of the current day SMSF strategies and how we need to adjust our thinking to capitalise on new strategies with retirement phase income streams.  In addition, this session will take you through the documentation and tools that are needed to be reform ready with new and existing income streams.

Re-think on SMSF estate planning

With the introduction of a $1.6m transfer balance cap, the super reforms require a total re-think on many of your client’s SMSF estate plans.  In this session, we explore the pros and cons of continuing with reversionary pensions, analyse what documents should be paramount for estate planning (e.g. which takes precedent – reversionary pension or BDBN), re-assess the benefits of insurance within super and understand the impact of death benefit payments with the transfer balance cap.
